What role did government play in the creation of the iPhone? According to Mariana Mazzucato, no less than 15 technologies used in the iPhone came directly from research funded by the government. This fast paced talk discusses government as a shaper and creator of markets, as opposed to the usual conversation describing government as a meddling regulator and administrator.
Innovation Economist: Mariana Mazzucato
Economist Mariana Mazzucato holds the RM Phillips chair in the Economics of Innovation at the University of Sussex and advises the UK government and the EC on innovation-led growth. Previously she has held academic positions at the University of Denver, London Business School, Open University and Bocconi University. Her research focuses on the relationship between financial markets, innovation, and economic growth at the company, industry and national level.
In her new book, The Entrepreneurial State, Mariana seeks to debunk myths about innovation in the private vs. public sector. The Entrepreneurial State has been a huge success and included as one of the 2013 Books of the Year for the Financial Times, Forbes and the Huffington Post. In 2013 the New Republic described Mariana as one of the ‘3 most important thinkers about innovation’.
